150 years into the age of expedited travel in the United States, the deeply human tradition of walking to visit friends is emerging again in national consciousness as an essential element of the human experience - liberating in all of the ways that our society now desperately needs, revealing once again our natural ability to move through the world cheerfully and unoppressed. This is a project of taking all the right steps in order to meet others for unhurried, unmediated, and unsurveilled communication.
Reconnecting to our ability to influence the world aided solely by community is at once an effort towards nonviolence and democracy. To work intentionally against the extractive, asymmetric over-culture of society is to find, wherever feasible, ways to live without the force multipliers that make violence inevitable. True coexistence will be born from a system in which each voice matters as much as the other, and actively works against the masses of power that deny this.
Extraordinary times call for novel approaches to advocating for our natural rights. The methods that seem unreachable are brought closer with a mindful, steady approach. These outer limits of our imagination are where a more robust concept of our potential is always found. In each of us there is a way to reach this edge - through walking, writing, organizing, or whatever comes most naturally.
